Hasil jalan2 nyari frame idaman membawa kami ke Ellsworth. Lumayan ngacay (air liur bertebaran, bahasa sunda red.) liat-liat Truth, Rogue, Specialist & Dare. Tapi yang lebih menarik malah “The Ride”. Bukan tampilannya, secara kalo tiap hari dibawa b2w bikin tengsin se-ibu kota propinsi, melainkan teknologi Ellsworth yang dinamain NuVinci. Teknologi ini sukses menyabet Grand Award Winner 2007 versi Popular Science.

NuVinci dibangun berdasarkan sketsa Leonardo da Vinceu tahun 1490 mengenai continuous transmission (transmisi berkelanjutan, alah!). Dengan tampilan single speed tapi hub segede gaban, NuVinci bisa memberikan kemungkinan rasio gigi sampai 3000 kalo gak bisa dibilang infinite. Bandingkan dengan kombinasi deraileur biasa yang 21-27 speed. Perbandingan lainnya dengan transmisi sepeda sekarang adalah proses perpindahan gigi yang instan, tanpa ada bunyi-bunyian khas seperti transmisi sepeda sekarang.

Prinsip kerjanya sih kalo diliat mirip CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission) pada motor matic, prinsip kerjanya aja yah, soalnya Nuvinci tetap harus ada proses pindah gigi. NuVinci menyebut prinsip kerja mereka CVP (Continuous Variable Planetary), bisa aja ya milih nama keren.

Sekelumit penjelasan cara kerja mereka hasil saduran bebas dari popular science :

Transmisi NuVinci terdiri dari 4 komponen utama: pemindah gigi, bola bearing, cakram penerus putaran pedal dan cakram putaran roda. Putar pemindah gigi pada handlebar dan bola bearing akan memiringkan dua cakram besi. Kemiringan cakram akan menentukan seberapa cepat roda belakang berputar relatif terhadap perputaran pedal. Apakah roda berputar lambat untuk gigi rendah, kasusnya seperti di tanjakan, lebih gampang genjot tapi gak nyampe-nyampe atau gigi tinggi buat pudunan.

Selain untuk sepeda, NuVinci memiliki potensi untuk digunakan pada mobil, traktor bahkan turbin angin.

“The Ride” udah bisa ditebus dengan harga $2.995 atau $3.995 buat Signature Series. Tersedia dalam tiga warna : merah, hitam, dan putih.
